I feel like we're more of a team. We're all chasing the same ultimate goal. By moving to Vena, my team has been able to build trust with all of our business users, which is incredibly important.
The Challenge: Bringing Consistency to a Complex Enterprise
Kroenke Sports & Entertainment operates one of the most diverse business portfolios in professional sports and entertainment. Alongside world-renowned franchises including the Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche, Colorado Rapids, Los Angeles Rams and Arsenal Football Club, the organization also manages businesses spanning real estate, agriculture and media. Each business operates with unique financial processes, reporting requirements and operational priorities.
For Steve Thomas, Vice President of Financial Data and Analytics, that complexity presented a challenge.
The organization’s finance teams relied on different ERP systems, distinct charts of accounts and separate reporting tools across the portfolio. Financial packages were distributed through spreadsheets, PDFs and even printed reports, making enterprise-wide visibility difficult. While individual business data was generally accurate, it existed in isolation, preventing leadership from gaining a timely, consolidated view of organizational performance.
"The biggest problem and risk was lack of visibility and transparency into real-time data," Steve explained. "It was very hard to take a step back and look globally at everything that we're running and managing."
The lack of standardization created downstream challenges for executives responsible for overseeing multiple businesses. Different report layouts, inconsistent financial definitions and varying account structures meant leaders spent valuable time interpreting reports instead of acting on insights. Consolidation required manual effort, while finance teams regularly recreated reports in Excel simply to compare performance across entities.
Determined to solve the problem, Steve and his team first built a centralized financial data warehouse. While the solution successfully standardized data behind the scenes, it didn’t address the needs of finance users across the organization.
"We were doing the right thing," Steve said. "But this single source of truth had to be democratized. It had to serve the needs of the downstream business users, or we'd never get the buy-in."
That realization led Kroenke Sports & Entertainment to search for an enterprise performance management platform capable of delivering both consistency across the organization’s diverse portfolio and flexibility.
The Solution: Building a Trusted and Democratized Financial Foundation
After evaluating several solutions, Kroenke Sports & Entertainment selected Vena for its native Excel experience, cloud architecture and ability to create a centralized, finance-owned data model without sacrificing flexibility for individual business units.
Using Vena, the organization developed a scalable hub-and-spoke approach to financial management. Shared dimensions such as entity, account and department create a consistent enterprise framework, while individual business units retain the flexibility to meet their unique reporting requirements. Information from every business flows into a common consolidation model, allowing leadership to analyze financial performance with consistent definitions across the enterprise.
The impact was immediate.
Finance teams that previously spent hours assembling reports can now generate them in minutes using standardized templates and dynamic reporting capabilities. Cash flow reporting, once nearly impossible to automate because of inconsistent account structures, has become significantly more efficient through standardized mappings across business units. Even businesses across the portfolio operating on different fiscal calendars can now be analyzed through a single, consistent reporting framework without extensive manual reconciliation.
"We've heard from our different businesses that they've saved a lot of time preparing reports," Steve said. "Users have gone from hours to minutes in pulling reports."
Just as importantly, Vena has helped transform how finance teams work together.
Rather than operating in disconnected silos with separate reporting tools and processes, teams now collaborate within a common platform, share best practices and build trust around standardized financial information. That consistency is laying the groundwork for more confident decision making across an operationally diverse enterprise.
As Kroenke Sports & Entertainment continues expanding its use of Vena, the organization is shifting its focus towards delivering consolidated reporting to executive leadership while exploring new opportunities to leverage AI, broader operational data and advanced analytics.
