You can't create and use AI effectively if it doesn't sit on something you trust. Once you're able to trust it, you're actually able to run your AI and focus on higher-order thinking and business partnership

The Challenge: Building an FP&A Function That Could Keep Pace With Rapid Growth

When Marchael Cunanan joined SpryPoint as Senior FP&A Manager, the SaaS company specializing in the utility sector was entering a period of significant expansion. Revenue was growing quickly, headcount was increasing, and the finance team was building its FP&A function from the ground up. As a result, the manual Excel models and reporting processes that had supported the business so far could no longer keep pace.

Planning relied on spreadsheets, flat files and manual consolidations that consumed valuable time each month. As the business expanded, those processes became increasingly difficult to maintain while preserving accuracy and confidence in the numbers.

"We were reaching really good growth and scale," Marchael explained. "The models that we had just couldn't really support that."

At the same time, finance wanted to spend less time moving data between spreadsheets and more time helping business leaders make informed decisions. Rather than acting as administrators of manual processes, the team wanted to become trusted advisors who could translate complex financial information into meaningful business insights.

That need for scalability, collaboration and confidence led SpryPoint to implement Vena.

The Solution: Creating a Trusted Foundation for Growth and Future AI Adoption

Because Vena is built around Excel, the finance team was able to modernize quickly without asking users to abandon familiar workflows. Existing models created in Excel could be enhanced instead of rebuilt, accelerating implementation while minimizing change management across a rapidly growing organization.

Within its first year on Vena, SpryPoint expanded usage across workforce planning, operating expense planning, revenue modeling and executive reporting. The company also achieved 97% expense forecast accuracy, driven largely by more accurate workforce planning and automated data management.

As SpryPoint added nearly 200 employees, Vena enabled the finance team to scale planning without adding the manual effort that had previously limited the process. More than 20 budget owners now contribute directly within Vena, eliminating spreadsheet consolidation, reducing transcription errors and allowing finance to spend more time partnering with the business.

Implementation also proved to be a success. Despite launching during annual planning season, Vena's Professional Services team worked closely with SpryPoint to prioritize critical use cases, provide coaching throughout the build process and help Finance become self-sufficient. The finance team was able to own and evolve the platform while requiring minimal IT involvement beyond initial security reviews.

For Marchael, the biggest benefit extends beyond automation. Trusted, governed data creates the foundation for better business decisions today while preparing the organization for tomorrow's AI-powered planning capabilities.

"We can't create and use AI effectively if it doesn't sit on something we trust," Marchael said. "If you're doing something manually, you can do things a lot faster. But then after that, can you trust it? Once you're able to trust it, you're actually able to run your AI and be able to do that higher-order thinking and business partnership."

Looking ahead, SpryPoint plans to continue expanding its use of Vena while exploring new AI-driven planning capabilities. With a trusted planning foundation now in place, the finance team is well-positioned to spend less time maintaining processes and more time helping the business evaluate strategic opportunities, accelerate decision-making and support continued growth.
