SAP BPC End of Life: What You Need To Know and Alternatives To Consider
Everything you need to know about SAP BPC end of maintenance—and four alternative solutions to consider as you determine your future technology needs.
To help businesses make critical decisions and stay agile in the face of change, FP&A teams need the right insights at their fingertips.
Without that, it’s easy to fall behind, or respond too slowly to shifting markets. That’s why choosing the right technology solution to manage your planning processes is key.
But not every FP&A platform is the same—each has unique functionality and user experiences, as well as strengths and weaknesses to consider. And not every solution will be the right fit for every business.
Whether you’re an SAP Business Planning and Consolidation (BPC) customer looking for an alternative solution now that SAP is ending maintenance on the platform, or you’re at the very start of your search for an FP&A platform, you may be considering SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC).
So how does SAC compare to Vena? In this blog, we'll take an honest look at how they both stack up, exploring the pros and cons of each platform, how the technology works, and what real users are saying.

By supporting multiple integration methods, Vena supports a range of connections to various source systems.
Vena has six pre-built connectors through Microsoft’s unified cloud-based data management and analytics platform, Microsoft Fabric. This lets users integrate data seamlessly from SAP S/4 HANA, Deltek Vantagepoint, Acumatica, Xero, Microsoft Dynamics Finance & Operations and One Lake.
Vena also supports integrations via bi-directional APIs, native connectors, ETL and Microsoft PowerAutomate—all of which means unmatched flexibility and built-in extensibility that lets you multiply your speed and reach.
Vena integrates with systems such as:
General Ledger and ERP: Work alongside NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics GP and 365 Business Central, Sage Intacct, QuickBooks and more.
Data Warehouses and Homegrown Systems: Integrate data from data warehouses, homegrown systems and SQL databases.
Microsoft PowerPoint: Improve data-driven storytelling by integrating live Vena data into presentations.
Microsoft Power BI: Empower better data visualizations, shared dashboards and access to wider data sources.
CRM: Connect to solutions such as HubSpot and Salesforce, to incorporate customer, prospect, pipeline and marketing data into your planning.
HRIS: Connect with data from HRIS and payroll systems such as ADP, Ceridian, Workday, Peoplesoft, Paylocity, Paycomm and BambooHR.
Excel, CSV and Flat Files: Import Excel, CSV and flat files from local systems or cloud storage applications like Dropbox, OneDrive, SFTP and SharePoint.
SAP Analytics Cloud integrates with the rest of the SAP ecosystem through live data connections. This means users can access data in real time from other SAP cloud solutions. However, the live data connection relies on the speed and latency of the source system, which can lead to slowdowns with large datasets.
The SAP Cloud Agent also connects on-premise data for SAP sources as well as SQL databases and file servers.
In addition, SAC integrates with non-SAP solutions through import connections, REST APIs, web services and custom integrations. And, the SAP Cloud Connector can connect to data sources within private networks.
SAP Analytics Cloud integrates with systems such as:
The SAP Ecosystem, including SAP S/4HANA, SAP BW/4HANA, SAP HANA Cloud and SAP Business Planning and Consolidation.
Microsoft Solutions such as Microsoft Teams and Microsoft Office, with an add-in for Excel and PowerPoint.
Databases and Data Warehouses such as Google BigQuery, SQL, Snowflake and OData connections.
Data Intelligence and Data Streaming Tools like Collibra and Confluent.
Vena is built around online analytical processing (OLAP) database technology. OLAP powers the multidimensional analysis of large volumes of business data, meaning you have more points of view through which to examine your data.
This lets FP&A teams blend the data they need from across both financial and operational data sources, in order to model various scenarios, create budgets, make forecasts and so on. Vena’s in-memory OLAP database also means less manual maintenance and no admin to create an intersection of data before it becomes viewable.
Vena integrates natively with Excel, which means users don’t have to toggle back and forth between Excel and a separate application, but that instead data is saved back to the Vena database and populates in Excel reports automatically.
Built on SAP’s HANA cloud platform and a JavaScript engine, SAP Analytics Cloud empowers business intelligence, planning and predictive analytics by connecting the two technologies through HTTP protocols.
On the frontend, a client-server model uses the JavaScript engine to power elements like the user interface, chart engine and a request generator.
Behind the scenes, SAP HANA powers an SAP Analytics Cloud tenant, where your content library and EPM models reside, allowing for in-memory data processing in real time. Users can also connect to cloud or on-premise data sources like the SAP Datasphere.
HTTP protocols connect the two, sending requests from the frontend to the backend, either through import or live connections, to power your FP&A processes.
“I particularly appreciate Vena's hands-on nature and its seamless integration with Microsoft Excel, which makes it an ideal tool for managing and consolidating our financial data effectively. “Vena does a great job at organizing your data into a simple database format. Your data can be complex, but with Vena it's easy to draw it down and organize it into ways that make sense. FP&A is now easier and our processes sped up.”
— G2
“I love the fact that Vena easily integrates with Excel, combining familiarity with powerful automations, real-time data consolidation and team collaboration, streamlining financial processes hence enhancing efficiency.”
— Capterra
“I appreciate how Vena simplifies financial reporting, annual budgeting and monthly forecasting by allowing easy conversion of information into management-specific templates. It streamlines the sharing of actual data with end users and compiles inputs from users across the company efficiently, providing audit trails for tracking purposes.
I find Vena extremely user-friendly, which enhances the overall experience for me and other end users. Its integration with Excel makes the system particularly easy for us to adopt and leverage to its full potential.”

“While SAP Analytics Cloud is powerful and well-integrated with the SAP ecosystem, there are a few areas that could be improved. The initial learning curve can be challenging for new users, especially when working with advanced modeling, complex calculations or planning scenarios.
Some features—like data actions, allocation processes and scripting—require deeper technical knowledge.”
— G2
“What I really appreciate is that this is an all-in-one platform for BI, planning and predictive analytics. Its seamless integration with our existing SAP systems allows us to access real-time insights without the hassle of transferring large amounts of data.
Additionally, the visual design of the stories is outstanding, making it much simpler to communicate complex information to others.”
— G2
“The best part about using the SAP Analytics Cloud is the ability to access real-time analytics, which enables easy and timely insights into any kind of changing business conditions.
This program can be very complex, as it allows a great breadth of data analytics at your fingertips, but the onboarding and user experience can be cumbersome. Some people also may have trouble choosing SAP Analytics Cloud because the cost may be too much for some companies. We have also come to find that integrating this program with other, non-SAP data sources, may not be easy or seamless.”
— Gartner
“SAC brings together business intelligence, planning and predictive analytics within a single platform. This means there is no need to piece together different products, allowing finance, operations and analytics teams to collaborate using one unified model.
SAC can sometimes feel sluggish, especially when working with large or complex models. Performance may also suffer if there are too many calculations involved or if data is being imported instead of accessed live. Additionally, if networks are not properly optimized, this can further impact speed. While using live connections can improve responsiveness, performance tuning is often still necessary to achieve optimal results.”

According to Gartner Peer Insights, 82% of customers would recommend Vena, compared to 78% of SAC customers. Infotech also found customers were more likely to recommend Vena vs. SAP Analytics Cloud, this time with 90% saying they would recommend Vena compared to 85% for SAC.
But the platform you ultimately choose—whether that’s Vena or SAP Analytics Cloud—will ultimately depend on the needs of your FP&A team and business as a whole.
Vena covers a greater scope of use cases compared to SAC, powering not only budgeting, forecasting, planning, and business intelligence, but also financial consolidation and close. If your team is looking to support more functions with one platform, then Vena may be the better fit.
If your team is used to working in Excel, for instance—or even the Excel-forward SAP BPC platform—Vena’s Excel-native interface is a strong differentiator, allowing users to continue working in the Excel environment they already know while benefiting from Vena’s advanced functionality and integrated data. SAP Analytics Cloud, by comparison, relies on an Excel add-in, which limits the breadth of Excel functionality you have access to.
If you’re primarily working in an SAP environment already, however, the integrations SAP Analytics Cloud offers with the rest of the SAP ecosystem may be appealing. SAC will add to your SAP ecosystem and help you work more seamlessly from end to end.
You’ll also want to consider how important AI functionality is to your business. SAC’s AI capabilities are still being rolled out, meanwhile Vena’s AI technology is further along in its maturity. Its agentic AI-driven Vena Copilot adds efficiencies to FP&A through faster data gathering, report generation and predictive forecasting—letting finance teams do more with less.
Whichever platform you ultimately decide is best for your business, we hope you find the best FP&A platform to meet your needs.
